How the SnugCore™ Ceiling System Works — Installation & Best Practice

How the SnugCore™ Ceiling System Works — Installation & Best Practice

The SnugCore™ Ceiling System is an engineered internal conservatory ceiling solution designed to improve year-round thermal performance, reduce noise, and create a genuine room-like finish — all without full roof replacement. It is a system, not a single product. Each component is selected and installed as part of a carefully designed build-up.

At the heart of the system is a high-performance multi-layered foil insulation layer. This material has a 15mm open thickness (which compresses under fixing) and is installed with correct air gap principles to maximise thermal resistance. All joints are overlapped by a minimum of 50mm and sealed with foil tape. When correctly detailed, the insulation layer acts as both thermal insulation and vapour control within the system.

It's important to note that multi-layered foil insulation is a component within the SnugRoof system — not a standalone product. Its performance depends on correct installation within the full engineered build-up.

    Timber Framing Structure

The system utilises treated softwood battens, typically installed at approximately 400mm centres, to create a structural subframe beneath the existing conservatory roof. The battens are securely fixed to existing roof rafters or a secondary support frame, providing both structural support for the internal ceiling and the required air cavity for the insulation layer to perform correctly. See our full system documentation for more detail.

    Lightweight Internal Ceiling Finish

The system specifies 9.5mm plasterboard as the standard internal finish. This thickness is chosen specifically for retrofit conservatory roof applications because it reduces load on the existing structure, is easier to handle in confined roof spaces, provides adequate rigidity when supported at appropriate centres, and delivers a smooth, clean ceiling aesthetic ready for skim finishing or decorating. This is part of the system's engineered approach to weight management — a critical consideration when working with existing conservatory structures.

    Vapour Control & Condensation Detailing

Correct vapour control is essential to the long-term performance of any internal insulation system. The SnugRoof system addresses this through sealed foil joints at all overlaps, a continuous vapour control layer across the full ceiling area, correct fixing technique that avoids puncturing the vapour barrier unnecessarily, and careful attention to perimeter sealing to prevent interstitial condensation. Poor vapour control detailing is one of the most common causes of problems in retrofit insulation systems — the SnugRoof system is designed to eliminate this risk when installed correctly.

    Performance Targets

Typical retrofit conservatory roof insulation systems aim for U-values in the region of 0.18–0.25 W/m²K, depending on build-up and site conditions. Final performance is confirmed at survey stage based on the specific conservatory structure. The system is designed to significantly improve thermal comfort compared to uninsulated conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss in winter and solar heat gain in summer. Common Installation Mistakes

Even the best insulation materials will underperform if installed incorrectly. Common mistakes to avoid include: not sealing foil overlaps properly (compromising vapour control), excessive batten spacing (leading to plasterboard sagging), poor fixing into rafters (creating structural weakness), and ignoring ventilation considerations (risking moisture build-up above the insulation layer). This is why professional installation matters — and why the SnugRoof system is designed as an engineered solution rather than a collection of off-the-shelf materials.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a full roof replacement?

No — it is an engineered internal ceiling system. Your existing conservatory roof stays in place, and the SnugRoof system is fitted beneath it to create a thermal and acoustic barrier.

Why not just buy insulation and install it myself?

Performance depends on correct detailing — including proper air gaps, sealed vapour barriers, appropriate fixing methods, and structural support. The system is designed as an integrated solution where each component works together. DIY installation risks poor performance and potential condensation problems.

Can UPVC internal ceiling panels be used instead of plasterboard?

Yes — we also offer a UPVC insulated ceiling finish for homeowners who prefer a low-maintenance surface. The choice depends on your finish preference and budget. Both options deliver excellent thermal and acoustic performance.
